Gracepoint is a community of people who love God and want to live out their faith in a practical and meaningful way.
We strive to Experience God and Engage our World Together. What does that mean you ask? Well, it means this: we want to know God more, letting His character and love for us influence and change our lives.
We “experience God” by spending time with Him through scripture, prayer or gathering together for times of worship.
From those experiences, we also go and “engage our world.” We strive to share His character and love as we live our everyday lives in our neighbourhoods and communities.
Sometimes that means we help neighbours or care for someone “just because.” Some of us volunteer at food banks or thrift stores, coach sports or serve on civic committees to be influencers. Other times it means we go half-way across the world on an adventure because God has led us there or sponsor a refugee family to help them start a new life in Canada. Whatever God calls us to, that’s where we go as individuals and as a church.
For those who like history and want to know where we came from, here is another part of Gracepoint’s story. Our church is the beautiful union of two incredible groups of Jesus followers: Peace Arch Fellowship and Panorama Community Church. To be sure, we’ve had our share of bumps and bruises, ups and downs. We have been blessed with seasons of plenty and times of want. We have delighted together and we have cried together. We have been REFINED and continue to be refined. It is a treasured part of our story.
While we are now one congregation and have been for more than 10 years, our diversity of people enables Gracepoint to be a vibrant, growing group of believers. Through it all, God faithfully leads us and provides. We are thankful to have people who are gifted in so many areas and it strengthens us we follow God together. Some of us are pray-ers, some doers; some prefer to lead, some prefer to come along side, many are generous with time and resources and most importantly, we work at being light in our little corner of the world… every day.
Who And What To Expect
When you walk through our doors, expect to see jeans, coffee, a friendly welcome, younger, old(er), in-between-ers, people who work with their hands, professionals, highschoolers and wee ones. You will probably see someone that reminds you of, well, you.
When we gather on Sunday, we grab a cup of coffee, visit with a person or two in the lobby and make our way (sometimes a little late if we’ve talked too long) into the service. We sing, we pray, we take an offering, we read the Bible and we listen to a teaching relevant to our lives and experiences.
If you’re new to Gracepoint, hopefully someone will say hi and recognize your new face, but it’s possible to slip in and out if you wish.
During the week, smaller groups of about 10 – 12 gather (Discipleship groups) around the city. They might dig deeper into what was taught on Sunday, do a book study, serve their community or focus on prayer. They are all a bit different but this remains constant – it is the best place to make friends and get known.
What We Believe
We love Jesus and do our best to follow where He leads us, period. We believe in the resurrection and that we are saved through Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross for us. We believe Holy Bible is God-breathed and we trust its authority. We read scripture, pray, worship Him and make time in our lives to do things that make a difference in our neighbourhoods, cities and world.
We believe in God as eternal Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. God created and sustains the universe. The eternal purpose of God the Father is to create a people who will bring glory to God forever. God alone is worthy of worship.
We believe that God became human in Jesus Christ. Jesus came to restore the world because humans have rejected God in disobedience. Jesus taught and modeled the way of God’s kingdom. He died on the cross, making it possible for us to accept a renewed relationship with God. He rose from the dead, broke the power of sin and death, and frees us to live in obedience to God’s will.
We believe that God the Holy Spirit invites all people to be reconciled with God and to join the global family of faith. Believers confess their faith, are baptized, and join in the celebration of the Lord’s Supper. Through the power of the Holy Spirit and guided by the Bible, members of the church seek to live as followers of Christ and invite others to experience this new life.
As Christians we are called to turn:
- from ignorance of God to a personal relationship with God
- from bondage of sin and past mistakes to freedom, forgiveness, and healing
- from individualism to interdependence with others in the local church
- from lifestyle choices that harm us, others, and the earth to choices that nurture wholeness, healing, joy and peace
- from hating enemies and ignoring neighbours to showing love and justice to all
- from loving possessions to sharing with all in need
- from aimless existence to a mission of representing and proclaiming God’s kingdom on earth.
As Christians we look forward to the day when God will once again send Jesus to bring all things under God’s eternal rule.
At Gracepoint, we know that one of the best ways to grow in your faith (as well as know people and be known!) is to be part of a discipleship group. There are groups that meet throughout the week, all over the city. Some meet more than others and some gather according to stage of life or gender, while others welcome one and all. We’re sure you’ll be able to find a group that is right for you!
Our in-home discipleship groups, sometimes called life groups or home groups meet regularly and are hosted and facilitated by lay leaders. Typically there are 8-14 people in a group and here’s what you can expect.
A welcoming environment
Expect a warm smile (maybe even a hug) as you arrive. Our leaders have a gift for hospitality so don’t be surprised to be offered a snack, dessert or a cup of coffee. Some even have dinner together on the nights they meet!
Study of scripture
Expect to open and dig into your Bible. Some groups do further study and discussion of the previous Sunday’s sermon, others may be doing a book or video study but all will be looking at what God has to say through His word.
Lively discussion and life application
Many at Gracepoint enjoy a good talk and you can most likely count on great chats. Not much of a talker? No problem…at all! Our leaders won’t put you on the spot or “force” you to share. Soak in the ideas and participate as you fell comfortable. Many leaders will challenge you each week to apply Scripture in your life, encouraging you to follow Jesus a little more everyday.
Remember how we talked about a great place to be known and know others? Often at either the beginning or end, our groups typically pray with and for one another. It’s a chance to celebrate the good things going on in your life and also a good place to share the challenges and hurts.
Women at Gracepoint want every woman to have connection and opportunity for discipleship. No Matter where you are at in life – whether single, married or divorced; at-home mom, professional or empty-nester; young or old(er), you have a place here!
Women at Gracepoint host seasonal events to create a welcoming space where you can invite a neighbour or friend who is “not religious” to an activity that starts a conversation – no more and no less.
On Tuesday mornings leaders facilitate groups, using a variety of content resources. These are great studies to build your understanding and application of Scripture. It is also an incredible time of prayer connection with other women. Studies take place at the church or in homes.
Our women also host a few “girls only” discipleship groups. See what they are about.
We value seeing the men of Gracepoint and men everywhere thrive in their workplaces, relationships and faith. Men also know that thriving is much more than just surviving.
The men of Gracepoint take time each week to invest in each other to know one another and learn from each other as they grow in discipleship and live their lives. Men of all ages participate and the guys are always ready to welcome new faces.
Each week, two specific Discipleship Groups meet for the guys only.
Young Adults Groups
As we grow, so do our group of Young Adults. Some of our 20-30 somethings prefer spending time in a multi-generational group and connect into one of our many discipleship groups, BUT we totally get that it’s also great to have a discipleship group to connect with people your own age. And in fact, we currently have THREE great options!
In Gracepoint Youth we try to orient all that we do around relational discipleship. We want to help our young people not only know about Jesus, but actually develop a relationship with him. It is our conviction that God is always at work and so we want to help our students learn to pay attention and respond to what God is inviting them into (to hear and obey). We facilitate this through committed youth leaders who are dedicated to their students and committed to helping them grow in the character of Jesus.
Our main vehicle for connection is our weekly THURSDAY YOUTH program. Students in grade 6-12 are invited to join us from 7-9pm in our youth room for connecting games, worship, teaching, and discipleship groups (generally age specific).
It is an AWESOME privilege to invest into our younger ones. Whether they are two months, two years or 12, we see the amazing potential they have to know and worship God. It is our great joy to come alongside parents and help families sow the seeds of faith into our kids. Like one of our children pastor’s said, “there’s no such thing as a kid-sized Holy Spirit!”
Children are led and loved by an incredible team of volunteers who invest into our kids weekly. Our desire is to help each child discover God in a personal way and partner with parents as they nurture their children’s faith.
Gracepoint’s kids’ ministry offers Sunday, midweek and seasonal discipleship opportunities to foster Jesus-following hearts and minds in little people as they Experience God and Engage our World Together.
Less formal in terms of content or structure than an in-home group, triads (sorry we just couldn’t find a better name!) meet regularly – up to 3 or 4 times per month. They are typically 2-4 people who go pretty deep with each other. There is no official “leader.” Rather, they meet together and help each other “hear God and do what He says.” Basically – it’s life to life discipleship where the rubber hits the road. Marriages, divorces, kids, hard times, relationships and work are all on the table for discussion. Sometimes you might get some mentoring, sometimes you might find yourself mentoring someone else. So, if you get a call or tapped on the shoulder to be part of one, DO IT! You absolutely won’t regret it!
Sunday Night Community Dinner
Every week volunteer teams from within Gracepoint and our larger community serve Sunday Dinner for about 200 people. Our friends in the area gather as we share a meal and stories with those who would otherwise probably not connect with a church. It is our longest standing outreach to the community and an amazing privilege to work alongside so many.
Broken relationships? Find life overwhelming? Constantly worry? Turn to food, shopping, alcohol, busyness or any other distraction to help you get through life? If you answered yes, then Freedom Session may be for you.
Freedom Session is approximately nine months in length. It is a Christ-centered 12-Step healing-discipleship ministry that will lead you on a journey towards the freedom and healing you’ve hoped was possible.
We won’t sugar-coat it: it’s intense, but SO WORTH IT! If you can invest the time, it will change forever your relationship with Jesus. This group welcomes participants every fall to start the journey.
